In late December, fellow Kiwanian and High Point Police Chief Jim Fealy announced his Feb. 29 retirement, and High Point City Manager Strib Boynton appointed Deputy Chief Marty Sumner to the post effective March 1.
In announcing the appointment of the new police chief, Boynton pointed to Sumner’s 27-year career in law enforcement and his many roles with increasing responsibility in the department. After one year with the Thomasville department, he joined the High Point Police Dept. in 1985 as a patrol officer. He has served as a field training officer in the patrol bureau, a vice/narcotics detective and residential burglary detective, and as a training officer. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1997, and worked in the patrol bureau, the vice/narcotics division, and as administrative assistant to the chief.
In 2002, Sumner was promoted to captain, then major/assistant chief in 2003. In that role, Sumner coordinated the department’s violent crimes reduction strategies. Fealy promoted Sumner to deputy chief in 2011.
Sumner, 48, received his B. A. from John Wesley College in 1995, graduating summa cum laude.
The High Point native completed the Administrative Officers’ Course of the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville in 2000, and the Senior Executives in State and Local Government course in the JFK School of Government at Harvard University in 2006.

Mr. Bauman is an Executive Partner with Wyatt Early Harris Wheeler, LLP. He has been with the Firm over 30 years. He
has a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University and a Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University.
Mr. Bauman has over 30 years of experience in civil litigation relating to employment,
personal injury, and insurance matters. A significant portion of his practice involves the
handling of employment matters, Department of Labor and Equal Employment Opportunity
charges, and workers compensation claims. In addition to drafting handbooks, EEO
and employment policies and conducting workplace seminars, he regularly advises and
represents businesses, individuals, insurance carriers and their insureds involving all types
of employment discrimination and contractual disputes in both the federal and state
courts.
Mr. Bauman is a Scoutmaster, Troop 2 Emerywood Baptist Church, a Deacon at Emerywood Baptist Church, and a Board Member, Family Service of the Piedmont, Inc. He has also been a Past Chairman, Board of Trustees, Westchester Country Day School, a Past Board Member, Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, and a Past Board Member,
